Teenage ANGST and how to get over it x

This was me. I would like to be an inspiration to young people lost in this mire. I am the voice of the future, the world will be better, and better with you in it. Being young and angst, is crap, but it does get better and when you realise that the more you learn, the more control you have, it is a gift of strength no one can take away- you actually begin to help others x It is a long road dudes, but there is loads of help along the way. Fight X
PLEASE watch this:

My new book is about a young boy, who escaped England with a head full of this, and my inauguration into the world of nice people, who I did not believe were out there- They are!

The 10 Faux Pas To Avoid In your first year as an author.

The Top Ten Faux Pas To Try and Avoid.

The learning journey is an exhilarating experience, but it is fraught with potholes and potential traps to bring you down, if you aren´t careful. Although, making mistakes is part of the process, you can minimize them by reading about other people´s experiences. I have just spent my first wonderful year in the book publishing world and I thought I would share part of my journey with you.

‘ making mistakes is part of the process …’

Faux Pas 1- Publishing your book before you have seen a marked difference in the quality of your writing.

All skills need time and practice to perfect. If you care about producing the best work you can, then don´t rush into publishing, or you will regret it further down the line. You must be disciplined enough to accept the fact that you need some training before you are able to go public, very few of us, if any, are born with instant talent.
Faux Pas 2- Using Dear Sir or Madam.

Surprising as it may seem, this generic way of formally addressing bloggers does not go down well with many. Bloggers appreciate it if you have taken the time to look around their blog and find out their name, although, some I feel make it particularly challenging, in order to test you.

Faux Pas 3- Sending a proposal to a blog of a different genre.

This is such an easy trap to fall into, especially when you’ve come across a list of fifty bloggers and you feel like you have to contact as many as possible, as quickly as you can. Getting caught up in marketing madness happens because you meet so many other authors doing it. It is not until you have been in the writing world for a certain amount of time that you begin to form relationships with the real professionals and you learn that less is actually more. Take the time to look at each blog and only target bloggers who may have a genuine interest in your genre.

Faux Pas 4- Posting generic E-mails.

These are easily spotted and discourteous. It takes a little extra effort to personalise a mail, but it is not a waste of time and is appreciated. You can include phrases like ‘I notice you mentioned an interest in…….’ to show that you have actually read some of the blog and profile page, or ‘as mentioned on your blog…’ You can still keep the bulk of your professionally drafted letter, it only takes a minute to reword it a little.

Faux Pas 5- Self-promoting in FB groups that don´t allow it.

This happens when you unwittingly fall into the whirlwind of self-promotion practiced by so many, even successful authors, and you become convinced it is the right thing to do. It is not! You may have spent the last few weeks searching for FB groups that could be interested in your book, and you might even have been smart enough to find some that may indirectly be connected with your story. However, having two hundred different groups should not make you too busy to bother reading their policies before you post. You will be forgiven at first, but then you will be blocked and lose friends if people see you have no respect.

Faux Pas 6- Responding to negative views.

I actually made the mistake of wanting to explain myself kindly and intelligently to a reader who left a negative review, in the hope of changing their mind. Don’t do it, or you risk walking headlong into a minefield, from which you will leave more bruised than you were before. In my case, I just gave a hater more opportunity to hate. Even if you did enter in contact with someone nice, who didn’t like your book, you would most certainly do more harm than good. And it works both ways, I do not recommend contacting strangers and thanking them for a nice review, either- too much contact with people, who do not invite it will have a negative impact, and could distance you from a potential fan.

Faux Pas 7- Misusing Google+ (An ongoing conundrum for me).

Google+ communities take their rules and policies a lot more seriously than FB groups, and in my experience they are a lot less tolerant of newbies. The main problem here was leaving links to my blog with what I thought were interesting articles, or quotes that I had invented. They didn’t like that. But, if I’d written down what I had seen, it would have been plagiarism, no? It seems that some people are averse to anything that even smells, or could be interpreted as self-promotion, so make sure you read their policies before posting. I still haven’t worked out how to use Google+ correctly, I am still finding my own wall filled with repeat posts, which I have sent to different places, and it looks very spammy. Any advice there would be greatly appreciated.

Faux Pas 8- Using certain templates to design your book cover.

I actually made a good cover using an old photograph and the CreateSpace cover design tool, which received a lot of positive feedback. However, I came across a site offering fantastic templates to make your cover look professional and stand out from the rest. Big mistake. The first person who used the template probably had great success, but by the time the fiftieth person has used it the marketing agencies have become bored of it. BookBub were actually very kind and explained that this was the reason they had turned me down: they’d seen the template before somewhere and it didn’t look original enough.

Faux Pas 9- Separating FB accounts.

With the best intentions, and still in newbie status enough not to know about the various privacy settings available, I thought my friends and family were being inundated with my book promos. So, I decided to create two FB accounts and save them the time I imagined they spent, having to delete all the repetitive messages. All I managed to do, was upset the people that cared about me and alienate them from most of my writing life. Luckily, my friends are starting to creep back onto my business account and getting involved again, but it was not a pleasant experience.

Faux Pas 10- Don’t Beat Yourself Up.

Making mistakes is called learning. Reflect on the error and move on to continue your wonderful journey as a writer.

What did I get done in my first year in the publishing world?

Met a great bunch of people would have to be the first answer to that.
I want to take this opportunity to thank all the bloggers, readers, writers and promotional sites who supported me during my first year as a published writer. By inviting me onto your websites and blogs you helped Kill Daddy get some great exposure and made sure the book fell into the right hands. You all have given me invaluable support and motivation, which has led me to where I am today: about to publish my second book- I Don't Believe God Wrote The Bible.
It feels good to look back and see just how much hard work we have put in with guest posts and interviews, cross promotions and networking. And it only seems fitting to compile as complete a list as I can of all the people involved in helping me get my stories out there. Apologies to anyone not mentioned, I have trawled the net in search of you all and would like to wish you a very Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year X

You cannot beat Happiness.

I was riding home in the bus telling myself how happy I was over and over again. I had just taught my favourite class of the week, high energy and fun. These intrusive relentless thoughts of happiness invaded my brain and then I remembered I had a problem.
How can I be happy when I have this problem? It is just a normal problem like everyone else has, but I felt I had the right to be angry and pissed off, but I wasn't. The power of happiness is uncrushable, create the life you truly want to lead and vaporise problems as soon as they hit the fan.
Positivity is fantastic, but happiness is better because by definition alone it cannot be forced.
This is exactly what my book is about, only I didn't realise it at the time. Finding happiness gives you all the strength you need.

Baggage 2012

My life is great apart from the worries x

Just got home 1.30am and a little worse, no better ;)  for wear. I live in such an amazing little village in the mountains above the sea. It has one mount full of interesting, wealthy heirs, entrepreneurs, new money, old money, who only ever mix with the natives on occasions. The rest of the population are wonderful Portuguese people, who have an intricate connection with Malveira after generations of living together.

Imagine, the pharmacists brother, is my neighbours sister and he is special police GNR, the most feared. My wife invites him and his American girlfriend for a meal. How many days did I have to spend cleaning up my house? I think we all became great friends and had a fantastic evening, this village is just full of amazing lovely people.

Eva and I had our fourth argument in 15 years. I kicked the dog bowl full of water and she told me that I was wasting our money on stupid things. It was horrible, we both cried. But, then it got better and months of silent frustration were vented-Portugal under TROIKA is killing normal families, I give 50% of my salary to the state. I earn 1200 euros a month. The Portuguese government is destroying people like me.

If I do not pay a 25 euro fine in time for not paying another bill on time, it goes up to 176 euros and then 227 euros, and then a person cannot pay the bills, and then it just ...

Back to my story about how wonderful Malveira Da Serra is. After making up with Eva, I went out to see the new small bar that has just opened in the village. I really needed to see a friend, I was depressed for the first time in 20 years and needed a man chat, but I didn't really think any of my real bros would be out tonight in that bar.

GUESS WHAT? I love coincidence, because I ended up meeting one of the nicest people I have ever met in my life. We went back to his house and talked and chatted and joked around like we had been mates forever. He went back to the bar, I danced in the mountains looking down on the sea and then skipped home high as a kite and fell on this keyboard-is this the writing version of reality TV?

This book is all about hitching around Europe meeting beautiful people like this X

My Wonderful Vice

The constant transition from writer to sculptor is metamorphic every time. And though I say constant, there are periods of months and eventually years between each change. I have two passions, which I must vent and I cannot give 100% to both. What the hell does one do, if they want to give their best?  Sacrifice, albeit temporarily, one passion, which is like saying goodbye to a friend.

So what changes? I still suffer with insomnia and the constant battering of my head space with intrusive thoughts that are screaming out to be heard, acted upon and released into the world of creative reality. I am still borrowing pens and scraps of paper from complete strangers as I go about my daily routine without a pen- I just can’t get into the habit of being prepared for it when it comes.

Although I am at the mercy of my thoughts and ideas for eighteen hours a day, for the last two years I have conceded to risk losing the ones that come at me while I lie in bed trying to sleep, when I never have the pen I plan to put on my bedside table every night.

I used to drag myself up and go down to the kitchen, where I would scribble down that thought I absolutely could not forget, praying to put pen to paper before that fantastic sentence would flit out of mind and be lost forever. However, I had to knock that on the head because sleep deprivation was ruining any chance of me creating anything the next day- the vicious cycle. I would compare it to being a junkie, I have been a junkie, but the drug of creativity is not a need, it is a part of who you are and cannot be given up.

So some would call it a curse and in some ways it is, but unlike drugs, where quitting will save your life, if you quit what is essentially the essence of who you are, you will be no more.

Thank you Life for my blessed curse X

The Post that is to come...

I am in the middle of a transition from writing to sculpture and it is a turbulent time. Having been immersed in literature and completing my latest book for the last 18 months, I now have to go back and dive into the world of sculpture, soI want to give you a taste of what is to come. Mainly because I am exploding with creativity and JOY!

COVER REVEAL! I Don't Believe God Wrote The Bible- coming out Jan 2015

I am so excited to have found a great artist to help create the cover of my new book. I hope the cover reveals enough of the story to entice you in. Looking forward to the launch.

I believe that we are forced onto the education/career conveyor belt as toddlers and are not allowed to get off until we are almost seventy. Our lives are dictated to us by society and peer pressure. I believe young people need time out to explore the world before they commit to a life they don't even know they want. The world is filled with people who did not realize their dreams, I believe this is detrimental to society as a whole and that we should be encouraging people to take time out to discover who they really are, before taking a path, which they will find difficult to come back from. The productive and positive energy that would come from individuals living their dreams could be enough to change the world eventually.

I Don't Believe God Wrote The Bible- Coming out Jan 2015.

Excerpt from my new book all about travelling and growing up.
'I plunged deep into doubt again, regarding all the decisions I’d made about Jan. Because of my inability, or reluctance to form relationships, I hurt the people that cared about me most. I’d rationalized that it would be better for me to go through life and have friends and lovers, but nothing deeper than that. I thought I’d found a sure-fire plan to get through my time on Earth without getting attached to anybody, therefore eliminating the chances of being hurt again when the relationship ended, or the person left me. My plan seemed to have backfired.'

The Bible needs editing.

I Don't Believe God Wrote The Bible- I believe society is in need of a more inspirational ideology and that a lot of the rules and expectations preached in the Bible are outdated.
